Charlotte Hornets Owned by Michael Jordan, the Charlotte Hornets thrill fans with their up-tempo "Buzz City" game in Uptown's Spectrum Center, also known as "e Hive." Today's reborn Hornets— the team became the Bobcats for a few years before restoring its time-honored title—features a lineup that includes all-star point guard Kemba Walker and top dra pick shooting guard Malik Monk. On game nights, Hornets fans swarm in purple and teal, while Hugo e Hornet and the Honey Bees cheer squad keep the buzz going. Charlotte Checkers Although the Charlotte Checkers came to the city in the 1950s, the team affiliated with its first NHL team in 1993. Today, it takes to the ice at Bojangles' Coliseum, and is a farm team for the Raleigh-based Carolina Hurricanes. e Checkers' international roster—they have players from Canada, Sweden, Finland and Russia—attracts a diverse fan base enthralled by the ultrafast ice show. Meanwhile, kids especially love the team mascot, Chubby, who breaks into a happy dance at the drop of a puck. Charlotte Hounds Major League Lacrosse came to Charlotte when the Charlotte Hounds began league play in 2012. e team hosts home games at the American Legion Memorial Stadium, where attacker Matt Rambo, the third player selected in the MLL 2017 collegiate dra, is a rising star to watch. Diehards cheer from e Kennel, while team mascot, Blue, peps up fans ready to release the hounds. Charlotte Independence e Charlotte Independence reside in the United Soccer League's Eastern Conference, where lightning-fast play and turf tussles are all part of a day's work. Founded in 2014, the team boasts one of the league's most popular goalkeepers, Cody Mizell, a former Clemson University All-American. Dress in royal blue and catch the Independence—named for legendary local Captain Jack's courageous journey—at the Sportsplex at Matthews. Racing at Charlotte Motor Speedway Opened in 1960, Charlotte Motor Speedway is known as the "Mecca of Motorsports," with its 1.5-mile quad oval, considered NASCAR's unofficial home track. Fans flock to the speedway for three premier events each year: the Coca- Cola 600, Monster Energy All-Star Race and Bank of America 500. Arrive early for pre-race activities and concerts, rent a scanner to hear driver communication and consider purchasing a Pit Pass for up-close entertainment. en, make it a weekend with a stay at the Charlotte Motor Speedway Campgrounds, which has a variety of campsites from full hookups for RVs to grassy areas for tents.
